What's new with the West Sacramento historical society?

The West Sacramento Historical Society installed an exhibit honoring the late Arthur F. Turner at the temporary site of the Arthur F. Turner Library in West Sacramento.

Bryan Turner, grandson to Mr. Turner, has lent several historic documents and photographs related to his family and the West Sacramento Land Company.

In 1925, Arthur F. turner established the West Sacramento branch library of Yolo County at his West Sacramento Land Company office at 15th Street and Jefferson Blvd. location.

In 1974, the Turner family donated land at 1212 Merkley Avenue for the relocation of the library as a memorial to Mr. Turner. The library is temporarily located at 840 Jefferson Blvd. in West Sacramento (northwest corner of Jefferson Blvd. and Merkley Avenue) until the new library is built. The current display at Elkhorn Village Elementary School (750 Cummins Way in the Broderick district of West Sacramento; 916-375-7670) will remain there up to six months. In addition to this display, the historical society is preparing an exhibit for the LaBou located at 849 Jefferson Blvd. All these exhibits are part of the society's community outreach program reflecting the history of West Sacramento.

The West Sacramento Historical Society Museum and Visitors Center (324 Third Street, West Sacramento, is working on an exhibit highlighting the Latin American items longtime West Sacramento resident Virginia Seamans donated to the historical society. Mrs. Seamans and her husband, Dr. Theodore Seamans, traveled to Mexico often visiting friends and collecting artifacts, books, household items from their trips. Many of these unique items will be on display in the exhibit which will open early this October.
